Bronstein. Move by move - Steve Giddins (K-3570/br)
David Bronstein is one of the greatest and most loved chess players of all time. He won numerous major tournaments and for many years he was one of the world’s strongest grandmasters. In 1951 he came agonisingly close to winning the World Championship title, drawing 12-12 against the reigning champion Mikhail Botvinnik. Bronstein was one of the most creative geniuses the chess world has ever seen, and he left a legacy of wonderful games. In this book, FIDE Master Steve Giddins selects and examines his favourite Bronstein games, brings light to some games which were previously unpublished, and shows us how we can all learn and improve our chess by studying Bronstein’s play.
Beating The Sicilian Main Lines - Jonas Hacker (K-5942)
The Sicilian Defence is the most popular reply to 1 e4. With 1...c5 Black comes out fighting, immediately challenging any sense of a “natural white advantage”. Sicilian Defence players are often very well prepared theoretically and the tremendous dynamism of the Sicilian can often disturb their opponents. In this book, German FIDE master Jonas Hacker provides a complete repertoire for White when facing the Sicilian. The recommended systems are based on solid strategic considerations. The backbone of the repertoire is the line 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 f3!? This is a perfect line to throw Najdorf and Dragon players off their stride. White will (usually) follow up with c2-c4 and establish a useful space advantage. Many of the other recommended lines are also based around the space-gaining c2-c4 advance providing cohesion across the whole repertoire.
In Opening Repertoire: Beating the Sicilian, Jonas Hacker guides the reader through the complexities of the Sicilian and carves out a repertoire for White. He examines all aspects of this highly complex opening and provides the reader with well-researched, fresh, and innovative analysis. Each annotated game has valuable lessons on how to play the opening and contains instructive commentary on typical middlegame plans.
- A complete repertoire for White against the Sicilian.
- A question and answer approach provides an excellent study method.
Jonas Hacker is a German FIDE Master. He has more than five years teaching experience and is a professional chess coach.
Attacking Chess: The French - Simon Williams (K-6215)
Grandmaster Simon Williams presents an ambitious opening repertoire for Black in the ever-popular French Defence. One of the world's most creative players combines his attacking alent with the traditionally solid French structure, resulting in a powerful armoury of opening weapons. This will prove ideal for players who like to seize the initiative and cause problems for their opponents from the outset. Williams' recommendations in the French are based on his own repertoire which he has successfully employed at Grandmaster level.
Attack! The subtle art of winning brilliantly - Neil McDonald (K-6000)
“To be passive... is fatal to the beginner or medium player – such players must be aggressive. He must attack, because only in that way can he develop his imagination, which is a very important thing.” This quote comes, perhaps surprisingly, from José Capablanca, a world champion far better known for his brilliant strategic and positional play than his attacking prowess.
Anti-Sicilians. Move by Move - Cyrus Lakdawala (K-3573/as)
This series provides an ideal platform to study chess openings. By continually challenging the reader to answer probing questions throughout the book, the Move by Move format greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of opening knowledge. Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an excellent way to study any chess opening and at the same time improve your general chess skills and knowledge.
Alekhine Alert! - Timothy Taylor (K-6210)
Former US Open Champion Timothy Taylor takes a modern look at one of Black's most ambitious counters to 1 e4, the Alekhine Defence. This is a sharp opening in which Black counterattacks from move one, luring White's central pawns forward to create the prospect of undermining them later on. The Alekhine is a popular weapon for creative grandmasters, such as Nigel Short and Vassily Ivanchuk. It has also been used by Bobby Fischer and - more recently - by Magnus Carlsen, probably the best player in the world.

A Disreputable Opening Repertoire - Jonathan Tait (K-6214)
A highly adventurous repertoire designed to meet 1 e4 with 1...e5 and take the initiative!
The main problem Black faces in answering 1 e4 with 1...e5 is the plethora of opening systems available to White: the Ruy Lopez, Giuoco Piano, Scotch, Ponziani, King’s Gambit, Vienna, Bishop’s Opening and so on. Each is likely to be White’s pet line, which usually means conducting the chess battle on the opponent’s turf.
